Iron Rail (Picked by Tyler)
Iron Rail Brewing is our top pick for comfort food and craft beer in downtown Topeka. Tyler and his wife love the consistently great food and laid-back “Midwest brewery” vibes. This in-house brewery is known for their great beer concoctions and signature house-smoked meatloaf. Barbecue plays a big role on Iron Rail’s menu, and we recommend the burnt ends, the spicy El Jefe with prime brisket, and the Three Little Pigs with pulled pork, ham, and bacon.
Craft brewing and genuine Midwest comfort food—it’s the perfect combo. If you haven’t been there yet, we bet your visit will be the first of many!
Blind Tiger (Picked by Andy)
Andy’s family has three teenagers, so it can be a challenge to find a place everyone can agree on. Blind Tiger is that place. The award-winning craft beers (six regular brews on tap and other seasonal drafts) are a bonus, but food-wise, there’s a bit of everything: steaks, Kansas City-style barbecue, sandwiches, and jumbo Tiger Wings.
Blind Tiger is one of the most established breweries in town, and it shows. We think this could be your family’s new favorite restaurant too!
785 Beer Company (Picked by Sharlis)
If you ask Sharlis where she and her husband like to unwind, she’ll point you to 785 Beer Company (a few miles from Lake Shawnee). A popular pizza joint, it’s one of the more unique restaurants in Topeka, with a casual vibe and indoor pickleball courts for some fun after you eat.
785 has a dozen and a half locally made brews on tap (Sharlis is a big fan of the pizza and craft beer combo) and an interesting menu. We recommend the molten hot Honey Pie with capicola and Crab Rangoon pizza, build-your-own mac and cheese, and Italian sandwiches.
Margarita’s Jalisco (Picked by Kimberly)
For authentic Mexican food and a welcoming atmosphere, Kimberly heads to Margarita’s Jalisco. Her favorites? The fajitas and carne asada tacos. The fast service and covered patio make it perfect for a quick lunch or casual dinner. With a mom-and-pop feel and tasty Mexican classics, it’s one of those places that always hits the spot.
Luis’ Place (A Team Favorite for Events)
Luis’ Place serves vibrant, gourmet dishes in an intimate, welcoming setting. Known for their chef-curated menu, Luis’ Place invites guests to indulge in small, thoughtfully prepared tasting events that showcase fresh seafood and cuisine. Every dish is crafted to delight and impress, and they create memorable dining experiences for guests who visit on Fridays and special occasions.
Luis’ Place holds a special place in our hearts, not just because of the food, but because we work closely with Luis to provide food for many of our RetireWise Experiences. We always look forward to seeing what new creations will appear on their weekly menu! It’s difficult to pick a signature dish, but past guests have praised Luis’ sandwich menu and our team is particularly fond of the Cuban sandwich.
